U20 SQUAD CONFIDENT AHEAD OF COSAFA AFCON QUALIFIER

Eswatini’s Junior National Team is targeting a strong showing at the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations | COSAFA Qualifier Mozambique 2026, with the squad expressing confidence ahead of the regional tournament in Maputo from 18 to 27 September 2026

The team’s confidence was on full display during Wednesday’s Media Day, where Assistant Coach Velekhaya Mtsetfwa highlighted the squad’s preparations and the players’ positive response to the technical team’s training methods and tactical approach.

Mtsetfwa believes the team has used its preparation period effectively and is ready to compete against some of the region’s top young sides.

“We are positive about the squad and the results we can get. We had enough time to prepare, and the players have responded well to the techniques and tactics introduced to them,” he said.

He also highlighted that the technical team made the most of the available preparation time to assess and develop players before finalising a squad capable of representing Eswatini at international level.

Beyond the results, Mtsetfwa described the tournament as a valuable development opportunity for the young players, offering them international exposure as they work towards progressing to the senior national team.

He also called on emaSwati to rally behind the national team, urging the nation to give the players the support they need as they carry the national colours in Mozambique.

Players eye strong showing

The players share the technical team’s optimism, with midfielder Phiwayinkosi Dube expressing confidence in the squad’s ability to make a strong impression.

Dube has set his sights beyond the group stage, with the ultimate ambition of helping Eswatini secure qualification for the continental finals.

Nkosenhle Tsela echoed the positive mood within the camp, while Xolani Malaza highlighted the talent and strength within the squad.

Malaza, one of eight players in the current squad who also featured for Eswatini in Mozambique in 2024, believes team unity will be crucial as the national team takes on the regional challenge.

Road to Ghana

The stakes are high, with the three group winners and the best runner-up advancing to the semi-finals. The two finalists will qualify for the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ghana in 2027.

Eswatini will begin its campaign against Angola on Saturday, with the aim of translating their preparations and confidence into a positive start to the competition.

This match will be followed by two matches against Lesotho and South Africa respectively.
