The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has officially crowned St Mary’s High School and Elangeni Primary School champions of the FIFA | EFA U19 Girls Schools Football Development League and FIFA | EFA U15 Girls Schools Football Development League, respectively, following the conclusion of the season’s competitions.

The prize presentation celebrated the achievements of participating schools and reaffirmed the importance of structured school football programmes in identifying, nurturing and developing young female football talent in Eswatini.

EFA General Secretary Mr Frederick Mngomezulu thanked the Ministry of Education and Training for its collaboration and acknowledged the contributions of schools, coaches, teachers, partners and the media towards the success of the leagues.

He congratulated the champions and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to improving the programme in the next edition.

“We want to create a safe and rewarding environment for girls and everyone involved in football. We thank Pc Systems for its continued support and congratulate our U15 and U19 champions. We look forward to an even better edition next year,” Mngomezulu said.

EFA Executive Board Member and Chairperson of the Women’s Football Standing Committee, Ms Phumzile Dlamini, praised the dedication of stakeholders and highlighted the transformative role of grassroots football in creating opportunities for girls.

“Today, we celebrate more than trophies and medals. We celebrate the talent, dedication and growing spirit of women’s football in our schools. We are grateful to FIFA and the EFA for turning grassroots development into meaningful opportunities for the girl child. We also thank school administrators, teachers and coaches for their commitment to nurturing young players,” Dlamini said.

Representing Pc Systems, the official partner of the U19 league, Mr Mandla Zulu reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting women’s football and acknowledged the efforts of the EFA and participating schools.

“We are excited to be part of this initiative, which contributes to the country’s socio-economic development. Our continued investment reflects our commitment to supporting the growth of girls’ football,” Zulu said.

Speaking on behalf of teachers and coaches, Mrs Nomcebo Mngomezulu of Mjingo High School expressed appreciation for the programme, noting its contribution to encouraging girls to participate in sport.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to see our girls encouraged to play football. Sport promotes good health and can also support academic performance. We thank FIFA, the EFA and Pc Systems for bringing our schools together through this initiative,” she said.

Mr Brian Dlamini, Principal of Matsapha Swazi National High School, also commended the programme, highlighting its value in exposing teachers to the Competency-Based Education (CBE) syllabus and reinforcing the importance of sport in schools.

“We recognise the importance of sport in education and will continue creating time and opportunities for our learners to participate in football,” Dlamini said.

Through the FIFA | EFA Development Leagues, the Association continues to strengthen school football as a foundation for grassroots development, providing young girls with opportunities to build their skills, gain competitive experience and progress towards representing Eswatini at regional and international level.
