SPANISH COACH TO LEAD ESWATINI’S FIFA TALENT DEVELOPMENT SCHEME
The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has officially unveiled Spanish football development specialist Tomeu Perelló Palou as the country’s new FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) Coach, marking another significant milestone in the Association’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of football talent.
The unveiling ceremony, held at Sigwaca House in Mbabane, introduced Coach Perelló Palou, who hails from Palma de Mallorca, Spain, and will be based in Eswatini for an initial two-year period, with an option for a further two-year extension. His primary responsibility will be to oversee the FIFA Talent Academy in Nhlangano, working closely with talented boys and girls while also supporting youth development programmes throughout the country.
Speaking during the ceremony, EFA General Secretary Mr Frederick Mngomezulu described the appointment as a major step towards strengthening Eswatini’s player development pathway. He noted that Coach Perelló Palou will play a critical role in identifying promising young footballers, refining their technical and personal development, and helping build a sustainable pipeline of elite players.
“The coach will help identify talent, refine skills both on and off the pitch, and contribute towards the long-term goal of producing elite players capable of competing at the highest level, including the FIFA World Cup,” said Mngomezulu.
Also addressing the gathering, FIFA Technical Consultant Serame Letsoaka emphasised the strategic importance of the FIFA Talent Development Scheme in narrowing the gap between emerging and established football nations. He explained that academy-based development provides young players with the consistent, high-quality training needed to compete successfully on the international stage.
“Consistent daily training from a young age will produce better results at regional competitions such as COSAFA,” Letsoaka said.
In his first remarks as Eswatini’s FIFA Talent Development Scheme Coach, Tomeu Perelló Palou thanked the Eswatini Football Association for the warm reception and expressed his excitement about the opportunity to contribute to the country’s football future.
“I am very far away from my hometown, but after only a few days here, I already feel at home,” he said. “I believe there is a great deal of talent in this country, and I am confident that, with time, we can develop players and unlock the talent that exists across Eswatini.”
The FIFA Talent Development Scheme is a global FIFA initiative aimed at providing every talented player with the opportunity to reach their full potential through structured coaching, elite training environments, and long-term player development pathways. Coach Perelló Palou’s appointment reinforces the Eswatini Football Association’s vision of creating a sustainable football development system capable of producing players who can compete at the highest levels of international football.
