ESWATINI U15 BOYS BUILD WORLD CUP CONFIDENCE WITH TWO WINS IN LESOTHO FRIENDLIES

The Eswatini U15 boys’ national team has stepped up preparations for the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival 2026 with two victories, a draw and one defeat in four international friendly matches against Lesotho in Maseru on 10 and 11 October 2026.

The series provided valuable international exposure for the young Sihlangu ahead of the tournament, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan from 24 to 30 October 2026.

The opening two encounters were played at Setsoto Stadium on 10 October, with Lesotho winning the first match 5-1. Eswatini responded emphatically in the second encounter, recording a convincing 4-1 victory.

The teams met again at Bambatha Sports Arena on 11 October, where the first match ended in a 3-3 draw before Eswatini completed the series with a 2-0 victory in the fourth and final encounter.

National U15 head coach Xolani Sgudla said the opening defeat was a challenging experience, particularly for players who were making their first appearance in international football. However, he noted that the team gradually overcame its initial nervousness and showed greater confidence in the subsequent matches.

“The first match was challenging because some of the boys were experiencing international football for the first time. There was some fear initially, but towards the latter stages of the second half, the players started settling down and gaining confidence. This was reflected in our performances in the matches that followed,” said Sgudla.

The coach emphasised that the friendly matches were an important part of the team’s preparations, providing the players with an opportunity to experience international competition and understand what is required at this level.

“These matches were very important for our preparations for the World Cup. Beyond preparing for the tournament, we are exposing these young players to international football, which will help them grow, develop and prepare for the future,” he added.

The two victories and draw will provide encouragement for the technical team as it continues to assess the squad and fine-tune preparations ahead of the trip to Azerbaijan.

The FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival 2026 presents a significant opportunity for Eswatini’s young footballers to represent their country on the global stage, gain valuable competitive experience and lay a foundation for their continued development in the game.
