EFA STRENGTHENS MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS CAPACITY OF MANZINI SUPER LEAGUE CLUBS

The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has continued its drive to professionalise football administration at regional level through a Marketing and Communications Workshop for Manzini Super League Teams and Competitions Committee Members.

The workshop was held on Saturday, 29 August 2026, at Caritas in Manzini and formed part of the EFA’s ongoing nationwide capacity-building programme aimed at equipping football clubs and competition administrators with practical skills to strengthen their operations both on and off the field.

The initiative recognises the increasingly important role of marketing and communications in modern football, where strong club brands, engaged supporters, effective media relations and commercial partnerships can make a significant contribution to the growth and sustainability of football organisations.

The workshop focused on several key areas, including football marketing, football products, branding, community engagement, strategic communication, media relations, and match day experience amoungst other topics.

Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of football marketing and encouraged to view their clubs as brands that require deliberate positioning, promotion and management. Discussions explored how clubs can identify their target audiences, understand supporter needs and create value for supporters, sponsors, communities and other stakeholders.

A major focus was also placed on developing football products beyond match-day activities. Clubs were encouraged to explore opportunities such as youth development programmes, tournaments, community initiatives, membership programmes, merchandise and supporter experiences as potential platforms for engagement and revenue generation.

Building Stronger Club Brands

The workshop highlighted branding as a critical component of modern football administration.

Participants discussed the importance of maintaining a consistent club identity through the effective use of club colours, logos, messaging, photography, publications and digital platforms.

A strong and professionally managed brand, can enhance supporter loyalty, increase a club’s visibility and improve its attractiveness to potential sponsors and commercial partners.

The importance of supporters was also emphasised, with clubs encouraged to develop innovative ways of engaging their fan bases before, during and after matches.

Social media, community activities, match-day experiences and direct communication were identified as some of the tools that clubs can use to strengthen relationships with supporters.

Embracing Digital Communication

The growing influence of digital platforms in football was another key area of discussion.

Participants were encouraged to make effective use of social media to communicate with supporters, promote club activities and increase visibility.

The workshop stressed the importance of producing regular, accurate, relevant and engaging content while ensuring that club communication remains professional and protects the reputation of players, officials, supporters and commercial partners.

Participants were also introduced to the importance of developing structured communication plans rather than communicating only when there is a match or major announcement.

Strengthening Media Relations

The workshop further addressed the relationship between football clubs and the media.

Club officials were encouraged to establish professional working relationships with journalists and media organisations, while ensuring that information supplied to the media is timely, accurate and newsworthy.

The session also covered media interviews and the importance of having appropriately prepared representatives who can communicate the club’s messages accurately and professionally.

Unlocking Commercial Opportunities

Commercialisation was another important component of the workshop.

Participants explored opportunities for clubs to generate revenue through sponsorships, partnership activation, advertising, match-day commercial activities, merchandise and the effective utilisation of their supporter bases.

The workshop encouraged clubs to move beyond viewing themselves solely as sporting organisations and to recognise their potential to provide valuable platforms for businesses seeking to connect with football supporters and communities.

Strengthening Regional Football

The workshop forms part of the EFA’s broader commitment to strengthening football structures throughout the country by providing clubs and administrators with knowledge and practical tools to operate in an increasingly professional, digital and commercially driven football environment.

Through continued capacity building, the Association seeks to ensure that regional clubs are better positioned to build sustainable brands, strengthen relationships with their stakeholders, attract commercial partners and create greater value around football.

The Manzini workshop therefore represents another step in the EFA’s efforts to ensure that the development of football extends beyond the pitch and encompasses the professional management, marketing and communication structures required to support the long-term growth of the game in Eswatini.
