SIHLANGU SEMNIKATI HONOURED WITH FAREWILL SEND-OFF AHEAD OF AFCON 2027 QUALIFIERS
The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) hosted an official farewell ceremony for the national team, Sihlangu SeMnikati, on Sunday, March 22, at the Lobamba Technical Centre. The event marked the team’s departure for the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2027 preliminary round against Eritrea, scheduled for March 28.
A Squad Ready for the Challenge
Captain Lindo Mkhonta, speaking on behalf of the players, thanked EFA President Peter Simelane for the association’s support and affirmed the squad’s mental and physical readiness.
“We are ready for the matches ahead,” Mkhonta stated. “Our coaches have prepared us well, and as players, we understand what this match means for us and the nation.” He further urged Emaswati to support the team through prayer and to fill the stands for the home leg at Somhlolo National Stadium on March 31.
Technical Confidence
Interim Head Coach Sifiso ‘Nuro’ Ntibane commended the squad’s work ethic, noting that the players remained injury-free following intensive training.
“The players’ dedication and discipline have shown immense commitment,” Ntibane said. “Their cooperation made our preparations seamless, and we are focused on achieving a positive result.”
The Royal Mandate
EFA President Peter Simelane delivered a stirring charge to the team, recalling the mandate set by His Majesty King Mswati III.
“Last year, His Majesty expressed his desire to see the country qualify for a major international tournament like AFCON,” Simelane noted. He challenged the squad to make history and secure qualification as a tribute to His Majesty’s 40th anniversary of sovereignty.
“It is time to make history in football. You must make us proud,” Simelane urged, before wishing the delegation a safe journey and success on the pitch.
The national team left Eswatini with 14 players, and 9 international players will join Sihlangu SeMnikati in Johannesburg before the squad board a flight to Egypt where they will be on-transit to Morocco which is the final destination.
