ESWATINI U15 TEAMS TRIUMPH AT COSAFA SCHOOLS FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Eswatini’s U15 national football teams returned from the CAF African Schools Football Championship COSAFA Qualifier in Stellenbosch, South Africa (5-7 December 2025) with a historic bronze medal and valuable continental experience. The boys’ squad secured an impressive third-place finish, while the girls’ team competed fiercely against a record field of 11 COSAFA nations.

Tournament Journey for Boys’ Team
In the group stage, the boys faced an initial challenge with a 1-4 defeat against Zambia. However, they quickly rebounded with a commanding 3-0 victory over Comoros, securing crucial group points. The semi-final match against South Africa ended in a 0-2 loss, narrowing their championship prospects.

The tournament’s defining moment came during the bronze medal play-off against Malawi. After a tense, scoreless first half, Sivikelwe Sibandze broke the deadlock with a critical header in the second period. When an unexpected own goal leveled the score five minutes from full time, the match went to a penalty shoot-out. Eswatini demonstrated remarkable composure, triumphing 4-3 and claiming the USD 50,000 prize.

Girls’ Team Performance
The girls’ squad also showed remarkable resilience. They suffered a challenging 0-6 loss to Zambia but responded emphatically with a dominant 6-0 victory against Comoros. In their subsequent match, they faced a 0-2 defeat to Lesotho in the Groups B and C second-place play-off, concluding their campaign with valuable regional tournament experience.

Heroes’ Welcome
At a celebratory briefing held at Lobamba Technical Centre, EFA General Secretary Mr. Frederick Mngomezulu congratulated both teams for their outstanding performances. He highlighted the boys’ bronze medal as a significant improvement over previous tournaments and encouraged players to apply lessons learned, including enhanced time management.

Mr. Mngomezulu challenged the teams to target future victories against traditional rivals like Zambia and South Africa. He also emphasized that the prize funds would support community and school projects, aligning with CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s developmental vision.

Team coaches praised the players’ discipline and commitment, expressing gratitude to the EFA executive, parents, and officials. The Head of Delegation, Mr. Lucky Dlamini, commended the teams’ exemplary behaviour throughout the championship.

This tournament marks a significant milestone in Eswatini’s youth football development, showcasing the potential and determination of the nation’s young athletes.
