The 2017 Schools’ Women Championships came to an end as the National Championship took the centre stage on Saturday 5th August 2017 in as far as Women Football is concerned. A total of ten (10) schools participated in the National Championships after qualifying from the regional phase. This competition commenced with the Zonal Championships thus a total of six hundred and eighty four (684) girls participated in this year’s women football development programme.
The National Championship was the climax of this Women football development initiative as the major question was who will be the National Champions? The participating schools on the day were, Njabulweni; Elangeni; Phonjwane; Moyeni; Hluthi Central; Hillside; Koberamokgadi; Makhosini; Ntfonjeni and Nkalashane High Schools.
For being crowned Champions after winning against Hillside High school by 3-0, Elangeni High school won a Trophy, gold medals and they are yet to receive a soccer kit from Ocean Basket. The runners- ups got silver medals. The was a third place play-off match between Makhosini High School and Nkalashane High School with the former winning by 2-0 and got bronze medals. There were also individual prizes which were the best player of the competition; best goalkeeper and the top goal scorer.
The best player award was won by Nonkululeko Sibandze from Hillside; the best goalkeeper was Nokulunga Lukhele from Elangeni High school. Sibonelo Dlamini was the top goal scorer of the competition.
